What is Microsoft 365 and what is it used for?
Microsoft 365 is the Microsoft subscription that bundles the Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook office apps, Teams for meetings and chat, and cloud services such as Exchange, SharePoint and OneDrive for email and files.
Each plan combines these items differently. Business Basic gives access to the web and mobile versions of the apps, and Business Standard adds the versions installed on the computer. Both include 1 TB of cloud storage per user and, in the versions with Teams, Teams.
Security and identity change by plan. Business Basic and Business Standard come with Microsoft Entra ID Free. Business Premium includes Entra ID P1, which enables Conditional Access, plus Intune Plan 1 and Defender for Business.
The Business plans serve organizations of up to 300 users in total. Above that, the Enterprise plans apply, such as Microsoft 365 E3 and Microsoft 365 E5. Azure and Power BI are sold as separate products.
