What is Midjourney and what is it used for?
Midjourney is an artificial intelligence service that generates images from text descriptions and also animates images into video, sold by monthly or annual subscription.
Creative and visual communication professionals use it to explore concepts, styles and image variations. The official documentation describes Style Reference, which captures the look of an image without copying its subjects, and the video feature, which starts from an image, begins at 5 seconds and can be extended 4 seconds at a time, up to a maximum of 21 seconds.
The service moves through versions. The version page says V8.2 became the default version on July 24, 2026, after a V8 alpha launched on March 17, 2026. In V8.2, the Edit Model replaces Omni Reference, Character Reference and the Retexture tool.
The paid plans are Basic, Standard, Pro and Mega. Commercial use by companies grossing more than $1 million a year requires the Pro or Mega plans.
