What is WordPress and what is it used for?
WordPress, in the WordPress.com offering, is a platform for building, hosting and publishing websites, built on open-source WordPress and used for blogs, company sites and online stores.
Hosting is by WordPress.com, which handles automatic updates. Content is assembled in the block editor, with pages and posts, and the look comes from themes the team adapts to the site's identity. The Free plan does not expire, uses a WordPress.com subdomain and gives 1 GB of storage.
Paid plans add a custom domain, ad removal, more storage and, from Business up, SFTP and SSH access, database management and a staging environment. Commerce installs WooCommerce for selling online.
Do not confuse it with the open-source WordPress software, which you install and host yourself: WordPress.com is the hosted service.
Who uses it: companies, content creators and digital presence teams.
