What is Asana and what is it used for?
Asana is a work and project management app where teams organize tasks, deadlines, owners and goals in one place. It is used to coordinate cross-team projects, track progress and connect day-to-day work to company objectives.
The foundation is tasks grouped into projects. Each task has an owner, a due date, subtasks, comments and attachments. A project can be viewed as a list, a kanban board or a calendar and, from the Starter plan up, as a Timeline or Gantt chart that shows dependencies and how deliverables chain over time.
Management layers sit above projects. Portfolios group many projects so status and progress can be tracked at once. Goals records targets and links each one to the projects that move it. Both are available from the Advanced plan up.
To cut manual work, Asana has Rules, "when this happens, do that" automations, and AI Studio, which builds AI-driven workflows inside projects. AI Studio Basic is part of every paid plan.
The most common users are marketing, operations and PMO teams that run many projects in parallel. The Personal plan is free to get started.
