What is Cohere and what is it used for?
Cohere is an AI lab aimed at enterprises, offering language models (Command), search models (Embed and Rerank) and an agent platform called North, through an API or in private deployment.
The models page of the documentation lists the families: Command, North, Embed, Rerank, Parse, Audio and Aya.
Each one handles a part of the work:
- Command: language models for generating and understanding text.
- Embed: vectors for retrieving content in more than 100 languages, according to the Embed page.
- Rerank: reorders search results by relevance, with a 32k-token window and calibrated scores from 0 to 1, according to the documentation.
- North: a platform for agents and for searching a company's knowledge, with its own models such as North Small Translate, for translation, and North Mini Code, for agentic coding.
Typical use is building search and answers over internal documents (RAG) or automating tasks with agents, keeping data inside the company's environment. Cohere says North can run in the customer's VPC, on-premises, or through Model Vault, its managed inference platform.
