What is Loom and what is it used for?
Loom is a tool that records your screen, your camera or both at once and produces a shareable link as soon as the recording stops. Teams use it to replace meetings and long write-ups with short videos: explaining a task, commenting on a design, showing a bug or walking through a proposal.
Whoever gets the link watches in the browser. If the video is public, no account is needed. Viewers with an account can comment and react, and the creator can see who watched, as long as the viewer was signed in.
Common uses:
- training and documentation of internal processes;
- asynchronous communication between teams in different time zones;
- product and design feedback, pointing on screen at what to change;
- support, with the steps recorded instead of written out.
Every video gets an automatic transcript, with support for more than 50 languages, and captions come from that transcript. Loom has been part of Atlassian since 2023, and on the AI plans a video can become a Jira bug report or Confluence documentation.
