What is Replicate and what is it used for?
Replicate is a service that runs artificial intelligence models through an API, so a team can use published models, or its own, without managing inference infrastructure.
According to the documentation, each model run creates a prediction, an object that stores inputs, output, status and timestamps. The call can be made through the web interface, the HTTP API or Python and JavaScript client libraries, using replicate.run() and a model identifier. Slow models require polling the status until the prediction finishes.
Teams with their own model package it with Cog, an open source tool that puts it in a Docker container. The flow uses a cog.yaml file for dependencies and a predict.py for the prediction interface, and the cog push command publishes the model.
To keep a model warm, Replicate offers deployments, which are private, dedicated endpoints with control over scaling and hardware. It is also possible to fine-tune an image model such as Flux on your own data, and the result becomes a new model called by version ID.
