What is Zoom and what is it used for?
Zoom is a business communications platform, best known for video meetings, that now bundles meetings, team chat, whiteboards, documents and cloud phone service in a package called Zoom Workplace.
The starting point is still Zoom Meetings: video calls from the desktop app, a phone or a browser. Around it, Zoom Workplace adds Zoom Chat for team messaging, included in every plan including the free one; Zoom Whiteboard; collaborative documents; Zoom Clips for short recorded videos; and Zoom Phone, cloud telephony with real phone numbers.
Since 2023, AI Companion, Zoom's AI assistant, has been included at no extra cost on paid plans. It summarizes meetings and works inside Meetings, Chat, documents and Whiteboard.
Who uses it: companies that run many meetings with clients and partners, who join through a link; remote teams that want chat and video in one app; and organizations replacing an on-premises phone system with cloud telephony.
The free Basic plan allows meetings of up to 40 minutes with up to 100 participants. Paid plans are billed per user, and Business raises the limit to 300 participants per meeting.
